The tallest and most majestic owl in North America — the great gray owl.

The great gray owl is probably the species that I’ve spent the most time in the field photographing. These large owls use perches to prey mainly on voles, but do occasionally hunt other small rodents. They thrive in old-growth forests with meadows or open areas to hunt. Great grays are an extremely sensitive species that deserve our attentiveness. Other names for the great gray owl include: Phantom of the North; Great Gray Ghost.
